Injoy, Inc. is sponsoring a Fable Writing Contest for students under the age of nineteen. Deadline to enter is October 18, 2013.

Free Summer Writing Program for Students

Free Summer Writing Program

Injoy, Inc. is hosting a FREE Summer Writing Program for students. These lessons contain ideas for students in PK through high school to write and enjoy fables!

Over the summer, students explore how to create a Fable, with weekly lessons that explore these creative writing elements:

storytelling: creating a beginning, middle, and end
how to create interesting characters
how to make up a plot complete with conflict and resolution
using dialogue to enhance the plot
writing an interesting moral to the story

At the end of the summer, students under the age of nineteen can submit their fable to the Fable Contest (contest kicks off August 23, 2013). The top fifty+ fables will be published in an e-book, with prizes for several different age groups for the most interesting fables.

[box_dark]And one of the most exciting parts of our Fable Contest: The e-book will be offered for sale on-line, with proceeds going to help purchase reading and writing materials for school children in Moore, Oklahoma.[/box_dark]

Flash Fiction Contest

But basically, we’re hosting a Flash Fiction contest for short stories less than 1000 words. Yeah–that takes real skill!

We’ll be selecting about 50 winners to be published in a compilation book, so if you’ve never been published, this is a great opportunity!

If you’ve never written Flash Fiction, we encourage you to sign up for the next online writing workshop on the subject of Flash Fiction. You’ll learn valuable skills for writing a flash fiction story, and might even increase your odds of winning a spot in the published compilation!

Writing Contest Winner Announced

Writing Contest Winner Announcement!!!

We narrowed down the original entries to 23 finalists and semi-finalists, who won a free membership to Write Now online writing lessons, and were invited to submit a professional book proposal for consideration for the grand prize.

We narrowed these professional proposals down to six very strong book ideas, which included some fantastic fiction and adventure books, and three non-fiction books.

After reading, rereading, and rereading again, Injoy, Inc. has finally selected the winner of the Writing Contest.

Jennifer McDonald has snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, skied in the Alps, strolled through the streets of Paris and Rome, and lived on an island in the South Pacific. None of those experiences would be possible if she hadn’t been a military spouse for the past 25 years! As a young airman’s spouse, she muddled through the newness of military life with the help of a few good friends. She hopes to be that friend to other spouses who are married to members of the military with her book, An Airman’s Wife.

As a writer, she’s contributed to numerous military spouse, homeschooling, and other publications including Military Spouse Magazine and Wives of Faith.

As Grand Prize Winner, Jennifer has won a prize package that includes cover design, formatting, editing, marketing, and webpage, free copies of her prize winning book, plus an opportunity to publish her book with Injoy, Inc.

The Injoy Team is so impressed with the quality of all of the proposals we received; it was truly difficult to narrow it down to one prize winner.

How To Write a Fable: Exploring Characters, Plot, and Theme

Fables are one of the most interesting story styles. They are generally short, but include interesting characters, a plot that contains a wallop, and a theme that keeps you thinking long after you finish reading the story–possibly coming back to your memory years later. Remember the tortoise and the hare?

In learning to write a fable, a writer hones their story telling skills, builds an interesting and memorable plot with conflict and humor, develops interesting characters, and weaves it all together with a theme that has value–a moral to the story.

Flash Fiction Online Writing Class

Flash Fiction is a literary form that takes a few elements, and tells a story very quickly.

It’s a great tool for a writer to have in their writer’s toolbelt! It is difficult to write a good Flash Fiction story, but it also feels very good–like stretching muscles during a workout makes a person feel healthy and fit.

Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway once made a bet with some other writers that he could write a short story in six words. He won the bet with this short story that contains all the elements of a story (beginning, middle, end), as well as conveying emotion and creating a bigger story, as it allows the reader to fill in the blanks of the story and continue writing it in their head and heart:

Flash Fiction is a style of story telling that very quickly creates a compelling story without wasting a lot of words, but still has a beginning, middle, end, compelling story line, interesting characters, and a plot twist that leaves the reader thinking about the story long after the words have been read. Writing Flash Fiction is a great skill to learn.

Charles Dickens could probably take 14 pages to describe the wart on someone’s chin (because he was being paid by the word), but Flash Fiction tells a story in less than 1000 words, complete with interesting characters, compelling plot, established setting, etc.

Writing a Flash Fiction story, gives you another great tool to have in your writer’s toolbelt! You will be surprised at how difficult it is to write Flash Fiction–but it will also feel very good–like stretching your muscles during a workout makes you feel healthy and fit.

In this eight-week session of Write Now, we’ll take you through the process of writing a Flash Fiction story and explore:

ways to use dialog and setting to enhance the story
and then we’ll write it, and revise it, talk about it, and share it!

Student Writing Contest Winner Announced

We narrowed down the original entries to 63 student finalists and semi-finalists, who won a free membership to Write Now online writing lessons, and were invited to submit a professional book proposal for consideration for the grand prize. After reading, rereading, and rereading again, Injoy, Inc. has finally selected the winner of the Student Writing Contest.

The winner of the Grand Prize Student Writing Contest is:

[quote]Rachael M. The Dawn Bringers’ Prophecy[/quote]

Rachael is fifteen years old. Her interests vary widely, but her true passion is to create honest stories that her readers will enjoy. She strives to execute those stories well, so that the struggles and strife of the characters, and their ultimate victories, encourage her audience by reflecting the hardships of real life. This led her to write about Audren, a young, out-of-place prince who lives in a time when the world is turned upside down, and there seems to be no way to turn it back again.

Rachael also enjoys the art and storytelling style of Japanese-style animation, and is currently writing a graphic novel, called a manga, and dreams of eventually animating it. She has won numerous writing awards, such as the Master of the Written Word award, and several 4-H awards for presentations which she wrote and presented at both regional and state levels.

She is also passionate about training and riding horses, and is currently training her two horses to compete in endurance races. She enjoys broadsword and kung-fu lessons, as well as longbow and compound bow hunting in the mountains around her home, and often draws upon her knowledge of weaponry in her writing.

The Injoy Team is looking forward to working with Rachael to design her book cover, help her complete her book, and then edit and format it, print it, help her market it, award her free copies, and publish it to e-book and print.

Flash Fiction; How To Write A Short Story

Anyone can write a book, but it takes talent to write a short story!

To establish interesting characters, create a compelling plot, and weave in conflict and resolution in less than 1000 words takes skill and effort!

Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature that can be as short as 300 words, or might be capped at a 1000 word limit. It’s kind of a break-time story; flash fiction is the kind of story you can sit down and read while eating a candy bar during break-time. And wouldn’t you like to write a story that leaves the reader going back to work wondering about what might happen next?!

The next session of Write Now will explore the elements of a good short story.
